The Klondike Gold Rush

The Klondike Gold Rush was a frenzy of gold rush immigration to and gold prospecting in the Klondike near Dawson City in the Yukon Territory, Canada, after gold was discovered in the late 19th century.

In August 1896, three people led by Skookum Jim Mason (a member of the Tagish nation whose birth name was Keish) headed up the Yukon River from the Carcross area looking for his sister Kate and her husband George Carmack. The party included Skookum Jim, Skookum Jim's cousin known as Dawson Charlie (or sometimes Tagish Charlie) and his nephew Patsy Henderson. After meeting up with George and Kate who were fishing for salmon at the mouth of the Klondike River, they ran into Nova Scotian Robert Henderson who had been mining gold on the Indian River, just south of the Klondike. Henderson told George Carmack about where he was mining and that he did not want any "damn Siwashes" (meaning Indians) near him. The group then headed a few miles up the Klondike River to Rabbit Creek, now Bonanza Creek to hunt moose.

On August 16, 1896, the party discovered rich placer gold deposits in Bonanza (Rabbit) Creek. It is now generally accepted that Skookum Jim made the actual discovery, but some accounts say that it was Kate Carmack. George Carmack was officially credited for the discovery because the "discovery" claim was staked in his name. The group agreed to this because they felt that other miners would be reluctant to recognise a claim made by an Indian, given the strong racist attitudes of the time. Further evidence of Skookum Jim's discovery is that he was eagerly followed by other miners and caused a mini rush when he later staked some claims in the Kluane Lake area in 1905.

The news spread to other mining camps in the Yukon River valley, and the Bonanza, Eldorado and Hunker Creeks were rapidly staked by miners who had been previously working creeks and sandbars on the Fortymile and Stewart Rivers. In a fate that many believe to be poetic justice, Henderson, who was mining only a few miles away over the hill, only found out about the discovery after the rich creeks had been all staked.

News reached the United States on July 17, 1897 when the first successful prospectors arrived in Seattle, and within a month the Klondike stampede had begun. The population in the Klondike in 1898 may have reached 40,000, threatening to cause a famine.

Most prospectors landed at Skagway at the head of Lynn Canal and crossed by the Chilkoot Trail or White Pass to Bennett Lake. Here, prospectors built boats that would take them the final 500 miles (800 km) down the Yukon River to the gold fields. Stampeders had to carry one ton of goods over the pass to be allowed to enter Canada. At the top of the passes, the stampeders encountered a Mountie post that enforced that regulation. It was put in place to avert shortages like those that had occurred in the previous two winters in Dawson City.

The Chilkoot Pass was steep and hazardous, rising a thousand feet in the last half mile (300 m in 800 m). It was too steep for pack animals and prospectors had to pack their equipment and supplies to the top. Some 1,500 steps were carved into the ice to aid travel up the pass.

Even though it was not as high, conditions on White Pass were even worse. It was known as the Dead Horse Trail with about 3,000 animals dying along the route.

Others took the Copper River Trail or the Teslin Trail by Stikine River and Teslin Lake, and some used the all-Canadian Ashcroft and Edmonton trails. The other main route was by steamer about 2600 kilometers (1600 miles) up the Yukon River. Many using this route late in 1897 were caught by winter ice below Fort Yukon, Alaska and had to be rescued.

An estimated 100,000 people participated in the gold rush and about 30,000 made it to Dawson City in 1898. By 1901, when the first census was taken, the population had declined to 9,000.

Throughout this period, the North West Mounted Police, under the command of Sam Steele maintained a firm grip on the activities of the prospectors to ensure the safety of the population as well as enforcing the laws and sovereignty of Canada. As a result, this gold rush has been described as the most peaceful and orderly of its type in history. The effectiveness of the Mounties in this period made the police force famous around the world, and ensured the survival of the organization at a time when its continued operation was being debated in the Canadian Parliament.

The gold rush remains an important event in the history of the city of Edmonton, which to this day celebrates Klondike Days, an annual summer fair with a Klondike gold rush theme.

Among the many to take part in the gold rush was writer Jack London, whose books White Fang and The Call of the Wild were influenced by his northern experiences, and adventurer "Swiftwater" Bill Gates.

Let’s watch a demonstration.0:46This is what the interior looks like: it has huge skylight that will eliminate passengers’ sense of depression when enter.0:56The straddling bus combines the advantages of BRT, it is also a substitution for BRT and subway in the future. 1:17As you all know, the majority vehicles on the road are cars, the shortest vehicles are also cars. 1:25Normally our overpass is 4.5-5.5 m high. 1:31The highlight innovation of straddling bus is that it
runs above cars and under overpass. 1:35Its biggest strength is saving road spaces, efficient and high in capacity. 1:42There are also two ways in dealing with station platform. One is to load/unload through the sides; the other is using the built-in ladder so that passengers can go up and to the overpass through the ceiling door.1:54There are two parts in building the straddling bus. 1:57One is remodeling the road, the other is building station platforms. 2:02Two ways to remodel the road: we can go with laying rails on both sides of car lane, which save 30% energy;2:10or we can paint two white lines on both sides and use auto-pilot technology in the bus, which will follow the lines and run stable.2:19Another strength of straddling bus is its short construction life cycle: only 1 year to build 40 km. Whereas building 40-km subway will take 3 years at best. 2:30Also the straddling bus will not need the large parking lot that normal buses demand. It can park at its own stop without affecting the passage of cars. 2:41Straddling bus is completely powered by municipal electricity and solar energy system. In terms of electricity, the setting is called relay direct current electrification. 2:55The bus itself is electrical conductor, two rails built on top to allow the charging post to run along with the bus, the next charging post will be on the rails3:04before the earlier one leaves, that is why we call it relay charging. 3:11The set here is super capacitor, a device that can charge, discharge and store electricity quickly.3:18The power it stores during the stop can support the bus till the next stop where another round of charging takes place, achieving zero toxic gas throughout the process.3:28Nowadays many big cities have remodeled their traffic signaling system, to prioritize public buses, that is to say when a bus reaches a crossing, 3:37red light on the other side of the fork will turn on automatically to give buses the right of way.3:43Our straddling bus can learn from this BRT method. The bus is 6 m in width and 4-4.5 m high.3:51How will people get off the bus if an accident happens to such a huge bus? Here I introduce the most advanced escaping system in the world. 4:00In the case of fire or other emergencies, the escaping door will open automatically. I believe many of you have been on a plane.4:09Planes are equipped with inflated ladder so people can slide down on it in emergency. I put the escaping concept into the straddling bus.4:19The bus can save up to 860 ton of fuel per year, reducing 2,640 ton of carbon emission.4:27Presently we have passed the first stage demonstration and will get through all of the technical invalidation by the end of August.4:34Beijing’s Mentougou District is carrying out a eco-community project, it has already planned out 186 km for our straddling bus. Construction will begin at year end.4:46Thank you.

Born from a military background, it's not surprising to discover that go-anywhere attitude backing up the Hummer brand. This mindset was best exemplified by the late Hummer H1

Realizing that not everyone would want the civilian equivalent of a Humvee, the company added the Hummer H2, available as an SUV and as a pickup dubbed the H2 SUT (sport utility truck). Still plenty capable, the H2 shares its platform with the Chevrolet Silverado, whereas the most recent product to debut, the Hummer H3 and H3T (the pickup truck version), is based on the Chevrolet Colorado/GMC Canyon.

Hummer was created as a civilian version of the Humvee (HMMWV, High Mobility Multi-Purpose Wheeled Vehicle), a military vehicle developed by AM General during the 1980s. The first model, simply called the Hummer, was launched by AM General in 1992, seven years before General Motors took ownership of the company. After that change, the Hummer was renamed the Hummer H1 and GM worked on expanding the brand's line up and broadening exposure to the mainstream market.

The results of those efforts could be seen in the Hummer H2, a rugged off-road SUV that offered attitude and sheer mass not found in many competing vehicles. A pickup version of that utility vehicle, dubbed the Hummer H2 SUT, followed. By 2006, the Hummer H1 had reached the end of its line, but the resulting void made room for the Chevy Colorado-based Hummer H3, available with a five-cylinder engine in standard guise or as the V8-powered Hummer H3 Alpha. A pickup version, the Hummer H3T, is also available, as is the more luxurious Hummer H3x.

Denny Free Meal-Superbowl special

Denny’s restaurants announced Friday they will offer a free Original Grand Slam® breakfast on the Tuesday after The Super Bowl.

Participating Denny’s will offer the free meal on Tuesday February 9 from 6:00am until 2:00pm.

Denny’s says two million people took advantage of the offer last year when it was announced during the Super Bowl telecast.
