Happy Valentine's Day-2008

What a beautiful day is today? Last few days we had some rain and cloudy and it was cold. But Cupid is busy today and The Sun is shining bright here in the South. What a Great day to celebrate this very special day with the person you love. "Valentine's Day,Februaty 14th.
Why is this day so special?

Valentine's Day is a holiday celebrated on February 14. In North America and Europe, it is the traditional day on which lovers express their love for each other by sending Valentine's cards, presenting flowers, or offering confectionery. The holiday is named after two among the numerous Early Christian martyrs named Valentine. The day became associated with romantic love in the circle of Geoffrey Chaucer in High Middle Ages, when the tradition of courtly love flourished.

The Legend-The Early Medieval acta of either Saint Valentine were excerpted by Bede and briefly expounded in Legenda Aurea. According to that version, St Valentine was persecuted as a Christian and interrogated by Roman Emperor Claudius II in person. Claudius was impressed by Valentine and had a discussion with him, attempting to get him to convert to Roman paganism in order to save his life. Valentine refused and tried to convert Claudius to Christianity instead. Because of this, he was executed. Before his execution, he is reported to have performed a miracle by healing the blind daughter of his jailer.

Legenda Aurea still providing no connections whatsoever with sentimental love, appropriate lore has been embroidered in modern times to portray Valentine as a priest who refused an unattested law attributed to Roman Emperor Claudius II, allegedly ordering that young men remain single. The Emperor supposedly did this to grow his army, believing that married men did not make for good soldiers. The priest Valentine, however, secretly performed marriage ceremonies for young men. When Claudius found out about this, he had Valentine arrested and thrown in jail. In an embellishment to The Golden Legend, on the evening before Valentine was to be executed, he wrote the first "valentine" himself, addressed to a young girl variously identified as his beloved, as the jailer's daughter whom he had befriended and healed, or both. It was a note that read "From your Valentine."

In another apparently modern embellishment, while Valentine was imprisoned, people would leave him little notes, folded up and hidden in cracks in the rocks around his cell. He would find them and offer prayers for them.

Modern Valentine's celebration of the West.
In North America, the day is most closely associated with the mutual exchange of love notes in the form of "valentines." Modern Valentine symbols include the heart-shaped outline and the figure of the winged Cupid. Since the 19th century, handwritten notes have largely given way to mass-produced greeting cards. The mid-nineteenth century Valentine's Day trade was a harbinger of further commercialized holidays in the United States to follow. The U.S. Greeting Card Association estimates that approximately one billion valentines are sent each year worldwide, making the day the second largest card-sending holiday of the year behind Christmas. The association estimates that women purchase approximately 85 percent of all valentines.

Valentine's Day also has regional traditions in the UK. In Norfolk a character called 'Jack' Valentine knocks on the rear door of houses leaving sweets and presents for children. Although he was leaving treats, many children were scared of this mystical person.

In Wales many people celebrate Dydd Santes Dwynwen (St Dwynwen's Day) on 25 January instead of or as well as St Valentine's Day. The day commemorates St Dwynwen, the patron saint of Welsh lovers.

In France, a traditionally Catholic country, Valentine's Day is known simply as "Saint Valentin", and is celebrated in much the same way as other western countries.

In Denmark & Norway Valentine's Day (14 Feb) is known as Valentinsdag. It is not celebrated to a large extent, but a lot people take time to eat a romantic dinner with their partner, to send a card to a secret love or give a red rose to their loved one. In Sweden it is called Alla hjärtans dag ("All Hearts' Day") and was launched in the 1960s by the flower industry's commercial interests, and due to influence of American culture. It is not an official holiday, but its celebration is recognized and sales of cosmetics and flowers for this holiday are only bested by those for Mother's Day.

In Finland, Valentine's Day is called Ystävänpäivä which translates into "Friend's day". As the name says, this day is more about remembering all your friends, not only your loved ones.

In Slovenia, a proverb says that "St Valentine brings the keys of roots," so on February 14, plants and flowers start to grow. Valentine's Day has been celebrated as the day when the first works in the vineyards and on the fields commence. It is also said that birds propose to each other or marry on that day. Nevertheless, it has only recently been celebrated as the day of love. The day of love is traditionally 12 March, the Saint Gregory's day. Another proverb says "Valentin - prvi spomladin" ("Valentine — first saint of spring"), as in some places (especially White Carniola) Saint Valentine marks the beginning of spring.

In Romania, the traditional holiday for lovers is Dragobete, which is celebrated on February 24. It is named after a character from Romanian folklore who was supposed to be the son of Baba Dochia. Part of his name is the word drag ("dear"), which can also be found in the word dragoste ("love"). In recent years, Romania has also started celebrating Valentine's Day, despite already having Dragobete as a traditional holiday. This has drawn backlash from many groups, reputable persons and institutions[25] but also nationalist organizations like Noua Dreaptǎ, who condemn Valentine's Day for being superficial, commercialist and imported Western kitsch.

In Turkey, Valentine's Day is called Sevgililer Günü which translates into "Sweethearts' Day".

According to Jewish tradition the 15th day of the month of Av - Tu B'Av (usually late August) is the festival of love. In ancient times girls would wear white dresses and dance in the vineyards, where the boys would be waiting for them (Mishna Taanith end of Chapter 4). In modern Israeli culture this is a popular day to pronounce love, propose marriage and give gifts like cards or flowers.

In South America

The exchange of chocolates and flowers is traditional on Valentine's Day.In Brazil, the Dia dos Namorados (lit. "Day of the Enamored", or "Boyfriends'/Girlfriends' Day") is celebrated on June 12, when couples exchange gifts, chocolates, cards and flower bouquets. This day was chosen probably because it is the day before the Saint Anthony's day, known there as the marriage saint, when many single women perform popular rituals, called simpatias, in order to find a good husband or boyfriend. The February 14's Valentine's Day is not celebrated at all, mainly for commercial reasons, since it usually falls too little before or after Carnival, a major floating holiday in Brazil that can fall anywhere from early February to early March.

In Colombia, the Día del amor y la amistad (lit. "Love and Friendship Day") is celebrated on the third Friday and Saturday in September, because of commercial issues. In this country the Amigo secreto ("Secret friend") tradition is quite popular, which consists of randomly assigning to each participant a recipient who is to be given an anonymous gift (similar to the Christmas tradition of Secret Santa).

In Venezuela, the Día del amor y la amistad(lit. "Love and Friendship Day") is also celebrated but this one does happen the 14th of February. The Amigo secreto ("Secret friend") tradition is also popular in Venezuela.

Chinese New Year 2008.

Being thousands of miles away from home in the United States, Chinese New Year is not a big event to celebrate for our family and a lot of Chinese families here. Christmas and Thanksgiving is more important.
Although in a foreign land, many of us Asians in America still keep our customs and traditions. The Reunion Dinner is very important. I did not prepare this for our family, as most of us are either away, to college or at work. Every year we usually were invited by one Chinese family, usually they owned a Restaurant and many of the friends and families would come together, also with some Americans Friends to have the Reunion Dinner.
This year we went to the China First Restaurant, owned by Kai Zheng and Amy.They cooked up a lot of food, Pork Chop, Stirfried Duck, Steamed Fish, Stir fried Crab,
Spicy Shrimp, Chilli Garlic Snail,Fish Roe Soup, Duck Feet, Rice Noodles, Cheesecake and cup cakes. We have a lot of beers, Tsingtao , Heineken, Japanese Plum Wine, and BudLight.
About 30 people came. We ate a lot, watch one Chinese Movie and sang Karoake. We gave out AngPow to the little kids, some big kids too. They were very happy.
The food was so good, not the daily buffet they served American Customer, but some
real Chinese Home Style. We had a really Good Time.We have to leave at 12 am, as many of us still have to work and the kids have to go to school. We do not have Official Holiday here, still have to work on Chinese New Year. I wished I was at home , holiday for whole week and really enjoy the New Year,. Anyhow we all had a great time.
Happy New Year to all my Asian friends here, Gong Xi Fat Cai.

Bad Breakfast/Lunch experience at Waffle House

Today I have to drive my husband and one worker to Eufaula where he will be picked to work at Dothan ,Alabama . We were early, cos the other driver would not be there till another hour. Instead of waiting one hour in the car, and a little hungry we decided to eat at the Waffle House Restaurant.
The little restaurant with about 10 tables and 6 barstool seats were a little busy, the tables were filled up. We waited for 5 minutes and when one table's customer left, we went over to sit down but were told by the not so nice waitress that she has reserved the tables for someone else. I told her we were there first, but she said she wasreserving the table for some ladies.
So when a few barstools were emptied, we sat down . Anothe waitress took our order. We ordered 3 grilled chicken dinners, came with salad, toast, and hashbrown. We had to wait like 10 minutes before she brought our drinks and only gave us 2 salads. The lettuce was brown. Anyhow it was okay, as I do not like salad too much.
I saw one of the chef, brought out the chicken breast from the freezer, it was frozen hard like rock.Another 10-12 minutes ,the chicken was done, but our waitress did not bring our plates . She was too busy counting her tips at the counter. Then, without washing her hands , she walked over to gave us our plates of Chicken Dinner.
One big Texas toast, one big pile of Hashbrown and OMG a tiny piece of Chicken. The chicken has shrink so much. This was the first tiny piece of chicken breast we ever seen at any Waffle House that we had ever dined in.
The District Manager was there and he told the Waitress to give us a $1.00 discount on each dinner. That was kind of him. But, due to the frozen stage, the chicken was cooked too long on the grill and was really tough. When I finish my hashbrown and toast,The texas toast was toast only on one side. I got a knife and cut into my chicken, and in the middle of the chicken was a long piece of hair. It was not mine, it was inside the middle of the chicken.
The manager asked if I wanted another chicken, .Yes, I was hungry. Still the next piece of chicken was tiny too.
Our bill still came up to $27.85 plus $2.00 tips. These was the worst dining experience we had at Waffle House. We always love the porkchop, chicken dinner and waffle at Waffle House, but not this one anymore.

In Memory of Mildred"The Pigeon Lady " of Columbus

Living in Columbus,Georgia for more than 15 years, I have always seen her at the downtown area and 13th Street area. She always pushed a grocery cart, with some groceries and a big bag of birds seed. She is Miss Midred Veasley Upshaw. She live a simple life of a homeless person. She lived on the street ,camping at the curb on Columbus Cherry Avenue and by the downtown area. She has a pot, where she sometimes cook by her campsite. She bought Johnnie Walker Red Label Scothch at Mr B's liqour store. She love the pigeons and they loved her. She fed them from the seed bags she bought with her groceries at Lewis Jones on 13 th Street.
That's why she got her nick name "The Pigeon Lady of Columbus".
She chose to live a life without walls. Some say she is a little mental but some said that she is highly educated and she is very rich. She lived the way she wanted to live, says her relative. She chose to roam, stubbornly refusing relatives' offer to help her find a home. Despite her odd choices ,she had no mental illness. She never go on welfare and never accept donation from anyone. Once I tried to give her a few dollars, but she told me to go away. She always
buy her seeds, meat, charcoal and firewood. She never get drunk, she never bothered anyone. She lived a simple quiet life on the street .
Her simple life ended last Tuesday morning when she died of hypothermia, and that sad news has prompted people to call the Columbus Ledger newspaper and coroner to ask what they can do and when her funeral. Her funeral was at 4pm at the Sconier's Funeral Home at 836,Fifth Ave. Columbus, where visitors will be given 2 minutes to share a memory of her Life. Her family has asked that in lieu of flowers, to make a donation for a local homeless shelter.
Miss Upshaw was born Oct.31,1928, in Waverly Hall,Ga. She was 79.
A lot of residents in Columbus has missed The Pigeon Lady. "You can't imagine how many hearts she's touched" said Wyatt ,an employee of Lewis Jones. "She 's like part of Columbus,Georgia". She always refused offers of food, money or blankets.
What remained of Miss Upshaw's other possessions still lay scattered Friday at the curb on Cherry Avenue where four bundles of flowers were braced against a tree to which was tacked a wooden sign that read: We'll miss you, Ms Mildred. Your Lewis Jones Family".
The Pigeon Lady of Columbus will always be remembered by manyt of us here in Columbus. We Missed You, Miss Upshaw.Who is going to feed the pigeons now?
